The Artwork of Shawn Doughty

The Artist
I was born and raised in Muncie, Indiana, a town rich with creativity as the home of Jim Davis, creator of Garfield, and where Bob Ross filmed his iconic series The Joy of Painting, both of which inspired me greatly as a child. Eventually, I relocated to Alabama, where I now work as a chemist for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
My artistic journey spans over two decades, with some of my works taking more than a year to complete. In 2020, I expanded my creative pursuits by acquiring sublimation printing equipment, allowing me to produce and sell printed materials to museums, gift shops, and other retail outlets.
The Artwork
Over the years, my passion for traveling and exploring the countless wonders of local and regional areas has become a driving force behind my artwork. Every journey fills me with inspiration, and the thrill of discovery fuels my creativity. Researching each of my collages is an adventure in itself—just as exhilarating as bringing the piece to life. With every blank canvas, I can already envision the vibrant scenes taking shape, bursting with energy and detail.
My chosen medium of ink and colored pencils allows me to craft intricate, captivating details that make each piece unique. While colored pencil art is often small due to the time required to layer pigment, I decided to go big—literally! From the beginning, I envisioned my work in a bold, large format. This scale lets me weave together an abundance of dynamic scenes, creating collages that are stunning from a distance and irresistible up close, where viewers can lose themselves in the finer details.
Each individual scene within my collages is designed to stand alone as its own story, yet together, they flow seamlessly into a vibrant, lively masterpiece. My goal is simple: to create art that sparks joy, evokes laughter, and stirs a sense of nostalgia. I want my work to transport people to a place of happiness, where every detail tells a story and the entire piece comes alive with fun and excitement.
